HEART DISEASE
The facts about heart disease are pretty staggering. One in every four Americans has some form of heart disease; that’s nearly 60 million people. Each year at least 250,000 people die from a heart attack before they reach the hospital. Learn more about preventing heart disease and recognizing the signs of a heart attack and stroke at the American Heart Association’s web site at www.heart.org.

DIABETES
More than 20.8 million Americans have diabetes. What is more shocking is that a third of those with diabetes don’t yet know it. The American Diabetes Association’s web site has a quick test to assess your risk for diabetes. Please note that this is only a test for your risk. I encourage you to visit your physician and be screened for diabetes. Visit the ADA web site (and get valuable information including healthy recipes) at www.diabetes.org.

LEUKEMIA
Leukemia is a malignant disease (cancer) of the bone marrow and blood.  More than 35,000 Americans will be diagnosed with Leukemia this year.  Find out more about leukemia, lymphoma, and related blood cancers the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society web site at www.leukemia-lymphoma.org.

HEALTHY CHILDREN
Getting your kids to eat all of their vegetables might be difficult, but if you want your kids to lead a healthier, active lifestyle, have them visit www.kidshealth.org, a web site designed especially for kids with doctor-approved health information. And maybe, just maybe, it’ll help get them to eat all their vegetables. (Parents are encouraged to monitor all internet activity by their children. Besides, it’s something that parents and children can do together.)

SMOKING
According to the Centers for Disease Control, diseases caused by smoking include:

  • abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • acute myeloid leukemia
  • bladder, cervical, esophageal, kidney, laryngeal, lung, oral, pancreatic, stomach, and throat cancers
  • cataract
  • chronic lung diseases
  • coronary heart and cardiovascular diseases
  • pneumonia
  • periodontitis
  • reproductive effects and sudden infant death syndrome

For information to help or a loved one quit smoking, visit www.smokefree.gov.
